Organization

Al Jamaat ul Muslimin of Bangladesh Mosque and Community Centre at 8 St George's Street was established in 1984. The organisation previously operated from 43 Argyle Street in St. James, the first Mosque in Northamptonshire.
No. 8 St George's Street is a Grade II listed building which has served the towns growing Muslim population since it was opened both as a Community Centre and Mosque. Today, it is primarily used for religious purposes. As well as holding the 5 times prayers, there is accommodation for evening Arabic classes, space for women and young people and a purpose built dead-body washing facilities.
The building which now incorporates no.4 St. George's Street, can accommodate nearly 1,000 worshippers typically on Fridays and at special gatherings throughout the year.

The building has been extended at various times since opening over 35 years ago. Owning to its listed status, the facade and many of the historical features inside remain intact. However, the building has been extended sympathetically to accommodate ever growing numbers of Muslims in the town.

It is still the largest Mosque in the town and a place that regularly opens itself up to people of other faiths. As well as hosting inter faith events, the Mosque plays a key role in the education of school children by organising tours and also supporting local initiatives like feeding the homeless.
